OpenAI Introduces First Unlimited ChatGPT Text Conversations for Free and Go Users

    August 7, 2026

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT for Free and Go plans by removing the text chat limits under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that unlimited text interactions will be available starting next week, with safeguards against misuse still in place. During this rollout, Luna is becoming the default model for these plans. Concurrently, free users will be granted a Think button, enabling the model to allocate extra time for reasoning through more complex questions before delivering a response.

This increased allowance pertains specifically to standard text exchanges, while restrictions will continue to apply to image generation, file uploads, and other features that require additional computing resources. OpenAI stated that the Think button will be introduced alongside unlimited text access next week. It can be activated when a question benefits from extended reasoning. This update provides Free and Go accounts broader access to ChatGPT’s core conversational functionality, while maintaining separate limits for other tools and services.

GPT-5.6 comprises several models, including Luna, Sol, and Terra, each designed to meet different performance requirements. Luna is recognized as the faster and more cost-effective option within this lineup. According to OpenAI, approximately one billion people utilize ChatGPT each week for activities like research, planning, writing, and searching. With the latest update, Luna now serves as the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users. The other GPT-5.6 models remain accessible within various products and plans tailored to different workloads and access levels.

Broadening Free Access While Tool Limitations Persist

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro are now using an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model for routine tasks and more demanding reasoning. The company explained that Sol now delivers more targeted responses and minimizes unnecessary detail when shorter replies suffice. Paid users also gain a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature allows users to adjust how much processing power the model applies to each request, which is useful for research, coding, writing, planning, and other activities requiring different levels of reasoning.

Furthermore, OpenAI shared results from internal tests assessing factual accuracy in its newest models. These evaluations focused on financial, medical, and legal questions demanding detailed factual responses. The company reported a roughly 62% decrease in answers containing at least one factual error when using GPT-5.6 Luna compared with GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68% under similar testing. Additionally, OpenAI noted improved performance in handling dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when such details influence the accuracy of the responses.

New Protections Enhance Safety for Younger Users

The GPT-5.6 models incorporate extra safeguards aimed at users believed to be under 18. These measures restrict content related to romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that might promote replacing real-world relationships. Additional boundaries are in place for sexual material, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. OpenAI explained that it implemented further assessments for responses involving younger users. The same abuse safeguards will be maintained when unlimited text conversations become available to Free and Go accounts through the expanded ChatGPT access.

This rollout affects the main ChatGPT service and does not alter every product utilizing GPT-5.6. Versions of GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex will remain unchanged as part of this update. Users with Plus and Pro subscriptions can now access the updated Sol model and the reasoning controls. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will receive Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited text conversations and the Think button will be introduced next week, with separate limits still in place for images, uploads, and other resource-heavy tools.
