First-Time Extended Power Outage Leaves Indiana City Without Electricity for Nearly Two Weeks

    August 25, 2026

GARY, Indiana / RankWire.AI / — In Northwest Indiana, a severe weather event has resulted in an unprecedented power outage affecting thousands of residents across Lake County. The outage, which lasted nearly two weeks, was caused by a derecho on August 11 that swept through the area with peak wind gusts reaching 99 miles per hour. This storm brought down hundreds of power poles and severed distribution lines, causing widespread infrastructure damage. Local officials and community advocates have criticized the slow response in restoring electricity, labeling the situation as an unacceptable instance of a US city being without power for such an extended period amid growing frustration among affected families.

Utility line technicians perform emergency electrical repairs along damaged suburban roadways.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO), the regional utility provider, reported that this storm represented the most extensive and complex damage event in its history, initially cutting off more than 300,000 customers. Although crews managed to restore power to most affected areas, Gary remained the most severely impacted community, with nearly 20,000 customers still without electricity late into the second week of recovery efforts. Company representatives explained that replacing damaged infrastructure involved installing approximately 300 distribution poles and 44 high-voltage transmission structures solely within the city.

The prolonged blackout sparked public outrage as residents were left without air conditioning, refrigeration, or functioning traffic signals during the intense summer heat. Emergency distribution centers supplied ice, bottled water, and non-perishable meals to families facing spoiled food supplies and medical shortages. Indiana Governor Mike Braun responded by activating the Indiana National Guard to assist with disaster relief, while federal authorities approved emergency disaster aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Utility Repair Efforts Continue as Thousands Remain Without Basic Power

Households bore additional financial burdens, with many spending hundreds of dollars on fuel for portable generators and traveling out of state to purchase ice and batteries. Local businesses, especially small retail outlets and grocery stores, faced severe disruptions, with many forced to shut down temporarily. Nevertheless, large industrial operations such as U.S. Steel at Gary Works maintained ongoing manufacturing activities through localized power grid configurations.

Leaders of civil rights organizations and local officials voiced concerns over whether infrastructure recovery was progressing equitably across lower-income communities. NiSource Inc., the parent company of NIPSCO, dismissed claims of resource allocation disparities, asserting that repair priorities were solely based on the physical severity of the damage. Utility officials also confirmed that hundreds of mutual assistance linemen from neighboring states were deployed to help accelerate grid restoration efforts.

Relief Operations and Cooling Centers Mobilized by Emergency Agencies

As crews worked tirelessly toward complete power restoration, state utility regulators announced that investigations would focus on utility tree-trimming procedures and system maintenance policies. Experts pointed out that the combination of straight-line winds and rain-saturated soil led to uprooting mature trees, which triggered cascading failures across overhead lines. The event has reignited a national discussion on modernizing power grids and the importance of burying distribution lines in areas prone to severe weather.

This incident has also exposed ongoing vulnerabilities within municipal power systems during extreme weather. The city’s inability to restore power for nearly two weeks has fueled frustration as local officials call for substantial long-term investments to prevent similar multi-week outages during future storm seasons. Over the coming months, regulatory reviews are expected to scrutinize the utility’s emergency response strategies and resilience standards to enhance infrastructure durability.
