First-ever US Pacific aid package surpasses $150 million in support initiatives

    September 3, 2026

KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – During a regional gathering in Palau, the United States disclosed a support package exceeding $150 million aimed at Pacific Island nations. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced this commitment on September 1 at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue. The funds and assistance are allocated to areas including energy security, transportation, digital infrastructure, maritime enforcement, and public service enhancement. According to the State Department, this package consolidates various programs across Pacific Island countries.

US launches Pacific support package exceeding $150 million
Pacific Island energy, digital and maritime projects form part of new US support.

A notable component is the $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative, representing one of the most significant segments of the overall support. The State Department indicated plans to allocate this funding in collaboration with Congress. The initiative aims to back fuel storage projects and improve electricity grid resilience. Additionally, U.S. officials outlined further infrastructure investments targeted at expanding access to vital services. However, several aspects await congressional approval before funds are disbursed.

Tonga is set to benefit from U.S. assistance for a comprehensive study of its fuel transportation and storage capabilities. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency approved a $1.42 million grant for this feasibility assessment. The analysis will include port facilities, pipelines, storage capacity, and Tonga’s fuel pricing structure. The plan also considers increasing the country’s fuel reserves from roughly 15 to 20 days of supply to approximately 60 days. This initiative is part of the broader regional energy support package.

Energy initiatives emphasize storage and infrastructure development

Among the support measures is a planned $50 million U.S. contribution for port upgrades on Penrhyn in the Cook Islands. New Zealand is expected to contribute NZ$17.5 million and will lead the implementation alongside the Cook Islands and the United States. The project focuses on enhancing port safety, cargo handling, and transportation accessibility on the remote atoll. It will also facilitate better connection to local services. This funding was announced during the same regional discussions in Palau.

Expanding the program further, digital and transport projects will benefit Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency is supporting a study aimed at modernizing Tonga’s national data center and network. Meanwhile, technical assistance in the Marshall Islands will focus on its mobile network, key ports, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will also receive support for a feasibility study related to relocating Belau National Hospital. These initiatives add to the package’s focus on communications, aviation, and public infrastructure enhancements.

Support for maritime security and advanced technology initiatives expands

Furthermore, the U.S. plans to allocate $17 million toward programs combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, pending congressional approval. These efforts will include legal reforms, compliance training, and monitoring technology. Washington and Palau will jointly co-chair a new summit of Pacific police ministers, concentrating on maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit financial flows. U.S. officials identified law enforcement measures as a key part of the broader commitments made to Pacific Island nations.

Additional projects will address cloud computing, seabed mapping, and drinking water services. U.S. programs aim to expand cloud support for Pacific governments, improve marine mapping and characterization, and introduce a drinking water sampling initiative in Palau, including training for local operators and laboratory personnel. Overall, the support package exceeds $150 million in planned funding, grants, and technical assistance, with some initiatives already backed by agencies and others awaiting congressional approval.
