Indiana Faces Deadly Flooding and Severe Storms for the First Time This Year

    August 17, 2026

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – Beginning August 11, Indiana experienced a series of intense storms and extensive flooding that resulted in the loss of at least seven lives. Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow their banks and submerged roads, residences, and commercial properties. The storm activity persisted through multiple rounds of rain, with central and southern parts of Indiana suffering the most severe flooding. Emergency responders spent days performing rescues, evacuations, and damage assessments across the impacted areas.

On-site officials identified the victims as including a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women. The fatalities occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two deaths, while the remaining counties each recorded one. Among the most recent confirmed casualties was a 31-year-old cyclist found in Henry County after floodwaters compromised a section of road.

National Weather Service data indicates some regions received over 10 inches of rain during the storm period. River levels surged sharply as successive storms moved across the state, with the White River reaching historic highs in Anderson and Noblesville—surpassing records dating back to 1913. Indianapolis also faced its most severe flooding in over thirty years as waters inundated low-lying neighborhoods.

Floodwaters Trigger Rescue Operations and Evacuations

During the height of the flooding, first responders deployed boats to reach residents stranded by rising waters in several communities. Local officials issued evacuation orders or assisted residents in leaving unsafe areas where streets and neighborhoods became impassable. In Noblesville, officials reported approximately 170 evacuations over a three-day span, affecting more than 550 homes. In response to worsening conditions, Indianapolis established emergency shelters and dispatched rescue teams to neighborhoods near the White River.

Electricity outages also impacted large portions of Indiana, with nearly 130,000 utility customers still without power late Sunday, after outages peaked at nearly 300,000. Floodwaters resulted in road closures, damaged bridges, and washed-out pavement in multiple counties. Once the White River crest declined, Indianapolis reopened floodgates, and local crews continued inspecting public infrastructure while residents began returning to properties affected by the storm debris and water.

    Federal Support Facilitates Recovery Efforts

Governor Mike Braun officially declared a statewide disaster emergency as local response efforts faced significant strain. Subsequently, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana following the state’s request for federal assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency can now support state, tribal, and local agencies under this declaration, helping with emergency operations aimed at safeguarding lives, public health, safety, and property. Meanwhile, state and local agencies continued their coordination efforts as floodwaters slowly receded.

By late Sunday, some river gauges showed signs of improvement from their peak levels, yet flooding remained a concern. Certain sections of the White River transitioned from major to moderate flood stages, though water levels in several monitoring points near Indianapolis remained above flood thresholds. Damage assessments persisted across the impacted communities, with cleanup work underway on homes, businesses, and public spaces as Indiana began its recovery from this severe weather event.
